Carey was 5'10 inches tall when she became a top model. She was a popular model among American fashion designers Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren was high. Her father is a distinguished geologist, who was awarded Scientist of the Year in 1979 at the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists. Carey traveled all over due to her father's work. While she attended in the University of Colorado, Carey began to model on the side. A representative of Ford's model agency in New York noticed her and asked for help. The model moved to France in the year 1980, and lived briefly in Paris and Bordeaux prior to deciding to move back to New York to continue with her education at college and build a modeling career and was soon appearing on the covers of Vogue, Glamour, etc. Between modeling gigs, she was a full-time student obtaining a major in literature at New York University. After a while she began to develop an passion for acting. She studied at Neighborhood Playhouse New York. In 1986, she got her first role in acting as a small part in Club Paradise, with Robin Williams. When she is not working she likes to ski, windsurfing, climbing rocks as well as whitewater rafting.
